How to Export Apple Mac Mail to Outlook PST for Windows

Are you switching to Microsoft Outlook email client from the old one? Switching from one email client to another is very common in these days. Generally, users switch email clients due to corporate constraint or any personal reason. If your old email client stores mailbox data in MBOX format, you just can’t open them in Outlook. In such situation, you have to convert MBOX to PST format. I’m sharing two utmost solutions here.

PST and MBOX, both are email file formats which store email messages and other mailbox content. But there’s a difference between them. MS Outlook client creates PST file, whereas MBOX file is created in various email clients, such as Thunderbird, Entourage, Spicebird, Pocomail, Apple Mail, Netscape, Claws Mail, Opera Mail, Mozilla Mail, Evolution, Sylpheed, Eudora, Mulberry, SeaMonkey, etc.

Many times a user needs to switch from one email client to another due to any personal or official reason. I have, myself, done such things more than a couple of times. First I used Outlook Express, then I switched to Microsoft Outlook. And then Apple Mail, and now I’m back to Microsoft Outlook.

How to perform MBOX to PST conversion?

Now in this post, I’ll share a manual trick that can help you convert MBOX file to PST format (import Apple Mail to Outlook). To make the entire operation easy and convenient for non-technical users, I’ve shared the screenshots which would be helpful here. Before performing the manual trick for MBOX to PST conversion, don’t forget to take backup of MBOX files.

First, you need to import mailbox data to MBOX file. To do this, follow the steps shown below:

Step 1: Open Apple Mail on your system.

Step 2: Go to the File menu, click Import Mailboxes… option.

Step 3: Now select the program or file from which you want to import the data. Click “Files in mbox format” and click Continue button.

Step 4: Now browse the location where the MBOX file is saved. Select the MBOX file which you want to import. Click Choose.

Step 5: Now select the item(s) you want to import. Click Continue to go to the next step.

Step 6: Once the process is done, click Done.

Step 7: Now you can see the imported mailbox is located in the Import section of Apple Mail.

Now you need Eudora (Windows version) to go further in this process. You can’t directly export Apple Mail to Outlook. First, you need to use Eudora for finalizing creation of the mailbox, then you need to use Outlook Express to import email messages. And after that, you need to import the mailbox from Outlook Express to Outlook. If you don’t have Eudora (Windows version), you need to download the latest version and install it on your system. After successfully installing Eudora on your system, follow the steps given below:

Use Eudora

Step 1: First append the MBOX file extension (which was imported earlier). For example: if it’s named “InboxMBOX”, rename it “InboxMBOX.mbx”.

Step 2: Now move this file, i.e. “InboxMBOX.mbx”, to the directory in which Eudora stores its files.

C:Documents and Settings<user>Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora

Step 3: Launch Eudora on your system. For finalize creation of the mailbox, you need to double-click the InboxMBOX.mbx file. After that, you can close Eudora.

Use on Outlook Express

Step 1: Launch Outlook Express on your system. On the File menu, click Import > Messages…

Step 2: Select Eudora in the list, and click Next to continue the process.

Step 3: Browse the location in which you’ve moved the InboxMBOX.mbx file earlier. Click OK.

Step 4: Click on Next > Next again. And then finally click Finish.

You can find the imported mailbox in the Local Folders section of Outlook Express.

Use on MS Outlook

Step 1: Launch Microsoft Outlook client on your system. Then click on File tab > Open.

Step 2: Click Import section to go to Import and Export Wizard.

Step 3: Select Import Internet Mail and Addresses in the list. Click Next to continue the process.

Step 4: Select the Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x or Windows Mail option. Click Next.

Now find the imported mailbox in your Outlook client. It should be located in Outlook Today – [Personal Folders].

If this solution seems to be tricky or difficult for you to perform, you can switch to a professional solution. Generally, manual techniques are the time-consuming task to perform and sometimes they may not work or may affect the original files. Don’t forget to take backup of your original files before performing any manual trick. So unluckily if any mishappening takes place, you can restore it from the backup.
