Different page types in Access database
Access database has different page types which are given below:
Database Definition Page: An Access database, be it MDB or ACCDB, always starts with a variable length header called Database Definition Page.
Different objects are contained in a database definition page, such as Jet version, encryption keys, and name of the creating program.
Table Definition Page: The table definition page is always found on page 2 of the Access database, and it belongs to MSYSOBJECT table. In an Access database file, every single table has a table definition page containing definition of the columns, types, sizes, indexes, and similar information.
Data Page: A data page stores all the records or data rows of an Access database file. An array of bytes with a given length is called record. Its content should be interpreted according to the data page type. Basically there are two data page types:
Table Row Page: In a table row page, every record corresponds to a row in a table. The record contains the contents of all fixed length columns as well as all variable length columns.
Long Value Page (LVAL):In a row, the total number of characters is limited by the database page size. There are MEMO and OLE fields to store longer texts and files.
The Long Value Page (LVAL) contains data of MEMO or OLE fields. They can easily contain up to 1 GB of data. There are two types of records in Long Value Page:
Type 1 records: to store data only
Type 2 recordsto: store a part of the data like a linked list, and point to the next long value page record.
Index Page: There are two types of index page:
Leaf Index Page: The leaf pages are 0x04 pages containing one entry for each row in the table.
Intermediate Index Page: The intermediate pages are 0x03 pages which create the rest of the index tree and contain a flag.
Page Usage Bitmaps: The page usage bitmaps have different functions. The page 1 stores a global page usage to track the allocated pages throughout the database.
The tables in an Access database store two page usage bitmaps. The first is the straight map of the pages owned by the table. And the second one is a map of the pages owned
by the table having free space. A table map bitmap is always fixed size for both Jet3 (128-bytes) and Jet4 (64-bytes).
Common reasons for Access database corruption
Like any other database file, an Access database file is prone to corruption. Corruption can make your Access database inaccessible and put your invaluable data at high risk. Few most common reasons for Access database corruption are given below:
Virus Infection: Since no computer file is immune to virus infection, it's one of the top most reasons for corruption in computer files. Access database files are highly prone to virus infection and they can be infected by virus attack at any point of time. Virus is a computer program that can easily edit, modify or delete some part of your file in order to make it accessible or corrupt.
Abruptly System Shutdown: Abruptly system shutdown is very harmful for your computer system as well as its data. It can cause severe damage in both ways, physically and logically. Also, you can face corruption or data loss in such situation.
Storage Media Failure: Storage media failure may occur due to various reasons, but it always results in data loss. It also refers to hard disk crash that can lead to file corruption.
Improper Synchronization: Data synchronization refers to a process of synchronizing a single set of data between two or more devices. Its primary function is to establish consistency among data from a source to the target data storage and from the target data storage to a source. If any interruption takes place in synchronization process or if it's performed improperly, the Access database file may get corrupt.
Software Malfunction: The primary reason of software malfunction is internal bugs. Another common reason includes the collision of a software application with other installed applications. Software malfunction can cause severe issues including corruption.
Human Errors: Humans are bound to make mistakes. And such mistakes in computers can cause severe issues. Human errors include closing the MS Access program forcefully, adding invalid content in the Access database, editing or modifying the database with Hex editor, deleting the crucial system files, etc.
