Technical Overview

Types of SQL Database Files

Microsoft SQL Server creates 3 different database types: MDF (primary), NDF (secondary) and LDF (log).

  1. MDF: An MDF file is the primary database of MS SQL Server saved with .MDF extension. Being the primary database, it stores all the user data and other database objects like indices, columns, views, functions, tables, keys, stored procedures, triggers, default values, etc. Also, it stores the startup information of SQL Server database. In MS SQL Server, each database has one primary MDF file.
  2. NSF: An NDF file is the secondary database of MS SQL Server saved with .NDF extension. Since it's not the primary database, you can create many NDF files as you want. Its primary function is to spread data across multiple disks. Also, it can store user data.
  3. LDF: An LDF file is the LOG file in MS SQL Server saved with .LDF extension. An LDF file is just like a backup for SQL Server database. It creates the log information of a database, and every database has at least one LOG file. In case of accidental deletion or corruption, LOG file can be used to restore SQL database.

Common Reasons for SQL Database Corruption

There are various reasons behind SQL database corruption. The most common reasons are discussed below:

  • Header Corruption: Since a database file has complex file structure, it becomes prone to corruption. Any sort of corruption in the header part of the database can cause corruption in the entire database file.
  • Accidental Deletion: If you delete some of the crucial SQL Server files accidentally or intentionally, it may cause SQL database corruption.
  • Storage Media Failure: The storage media failure plays an important role in file corruption. Since files are stored on the storage media, be it a local drive or any external media device, any sort of failure or crash can cause corruption or data loss.
  • Network Failure: The role of network is very important when the SQL database is in working mode. But if the network failure occurs or any interruption takes place, it may cause corruption in SQL database file.
  • Unnecessary Use of Compression: Generally users use compression to store their large-sized files. It's good and quite helpful. But in case of SQL Server database, you should avoid using compression. If you use compressed folders to store SQL database, you put your crucial data at high risk.
  • Virus Attacks: Virus is very harmful for almost all computer files. Even SQL database files are not immune to virus attacks. It may corrupt the SQL database file by editing or modifying the internal file structure.
  • Internal Bugs: Almost all computer programs have some internal bugs. They degrade the software performance, and can cause frequent crashes. Also, they might be harmful for the files created by the software.
  • Software Malfunction: Software malfunction occurs due to the internal bugs, collision with other installed applications and human errors. It may result in corruption.
  • Abruptly System Shutdown: Abruptly system shutdown can cause severe damage. It occurs due to sudden power outage or sometimes intentionally by users. If you're working on a database and suddenly the system shuts down, it may cause corruption in that database.
  • Human Errors: Human errors include all the mistakes done by a computer user, such as making unwanted changes in SQL Server accounts, closing the SQL Server forcefully, adding invalid content in the SQL database, editing or modifying the database with Hex editor, deleting the crucial system files, etc.

List of Error Messages of Corrupt SQL Database

  • FileName.mdf is not a primary database file. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5171)
  • Database FileName.mdf cannot be opened due to inaccessible files or insufficient memory or disk space. See the SQL Server error log for details.
  • The physical file name FileName.mdf may be incorrect.
  • The header for file FileName.mdf is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5172)
  • Database consistency errors reported by DBCC CHECKB.
  • Could not open File Control Bank (FCB) for invalid file ID.
  • SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: incorrect checksum.
  • SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: torn page.
